Canvas Quiz Results & Feedback
In Canvas, when a quiz or exam is created and the default settings are not changed, students are able to see their quiz feedback, including what they got correct and incorrect, and the what the correct answers should have been immediately upon completion of the quiz or exam. This is the opposite of what we are used to with Brightspace. It will be important to remember to edit the following settings before you publish any quiz or exam in order to prevent students from seeing the quiz feedback immediately after their submission, or at all, depending on your preference.
- From within the quiz's build page, click on the Settings tab near the top of the page.
- Click on the toggle next to "Hide results from students".
- If this is all you do, students won't be able to see their quiz feedback at all. If you want them to see the feedback after a specific date and time (after the quiz's available until date, possibly), please continue to step 3.
- Enable "Show questions" and "Show student responses".
- You can probably leave "For all attempts" enabled as most quizzes/exams only allow one attempt and you may want to allow them to see feedback on each attempt if you are allowing multiple attempts.
- Use the "Show on/at" field to set the date and time you wish the students to be able to view their feedback and quiz results.
- If you also want to limit the period of time they can view their quiz submission, you can use the "Hide on/at" section, but it's not required.
- If you want students to see if they got a question correct or incorrect, you need to enable the "Indicate response as correct or incorrect".
- With "Indicate response as correct or incorrect" enabled, you now have a "Show correct answer" checkbox, which you can check if you want the student to not only see the ones they got wrong, but what the correct answer should have been.
- If you only want them to be able to see their correct and incorrect responses for a period of time, you can use the Show on/at and Hide on/at boxes to set those dates and times.
It is important to note that these settings need to be enabled for every quiz and exam you create in which you do not want the students to be able to see their results immediately upon completion of the quiz or exam.
Sidenote: If your quiz uses Respondus Lockdown Browser, there is currently a bug in Canvas that prevents students from viewing their quiz results at all while Respondus Lockdown Browser and the quiz's "Available Until" date are both enabled. The recommended workaround for this bug is to turn Respondus Lockdown Browser off after all students have completed the quiz or exam.
